The Five find their way to Moab, Utah where, before they’re even settled in, evil finds them. As Paige fights to keep from succumbing to the pull of an Incubus that has her marked as his next conquest, Johnathan seeks to find a way to rid her of a curse she willingly accepted in order to save him. A surprising revelation initiates a long-awaited, yet unexpected, reunion for Alec who discovers a new magical talent he possesses.
The FIVE, along with their mentor, Joe, must figure out what was meant by the last words of a Demon as it was sent back to the Netherworld—a promise of Gathering darkness—and stop the evil before it’s unleashed on the small town of Moab. And, the world.
By the end of this book, I was as exhausted emotionally as Paige was physically. The book is so detailed that I felt every single emotion like it was mine; the drama, the suspense, the romance, the magic. As a standalone, it is a great read; I didn’t feel like I missed any action from the first book. I understood the characters and their relationships and there was no unnecessary back-story. Although it is very detailed, the book is not crammed with irrelevant facts or data. The story is well thought-out and wasn’t rushed. I can’t decided which character is my favourite, because they are all as human as can be, really cool and have awesome powers, which I am jealous of. Except for the grease balls and demons, of course. Overall, the author has done a painstaking and incredible job; she left nothing out. There is still the suspense of not knowing what happens to Halli or what it could mean; the war is far from over. There are probably three more books in the offing, but to be honest, I was glad to get off the emotional roller coaster for a while. I also think it’s great how she infused her knowledge from nursing into the book. Holli Anderson is a skilled writer.
If you love urban fantasy and/or demons, this is your read.
